MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The program is run by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, state and local chapters of the NSPE, and many, many volunteers. Participation in the program is through your school. MATHCOUNTS provides an opportunity for students to have fun while exploring areas of math that they may not see in their normal class curriculum. It also gives students a chance to be recognized for their achievements on both team and individual bases. The program targets this age group in order to influence their thinking about math, and to encourage them to continue challenging themselves in the subject as they select high school courses. A link to the national MATHCOUNTS web site is below.

MATHCOUNTS has two major programs: the Competition Program and the Club Program.

In the Competition Program, schools receive math problems, activities, and a school competition package that they can use to prepare for regional (chapter) competitions in February. Winning teams and individuals at the regional competitions advance to compete in the state competition in March. The top 4 individuals and the coach of the winning team from the state competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to the National Competition in May where they represent Indiana and compete against students from across the country. Indiana has performed well at the national level, winning the team national championship in 1995 and 2015, and the individual national championship in 2008, 2012, and 2015.

In the Club Program (free), schools are provided the structure, activities, and problems they can use to form a math club. Participating schools are eligible for prize drawings.

Indiana MATHCOUNTS

Program Status

December 22, 2025: We have 530 mathletes from 60 Indiana schools registered to participate as of the normal registration deadline.  Late registrations may still be accepted if the chapter coordinators have the room and materials to accommodate them.  Contact your coordinator if you have any questions.

The criteria for advancement to the state competition are unchanged from last year:

To advance to the state competition, a student must meet at least one of the following:

    1. Be a member of an official school team that finished in the top 25% of their chapter’s team competition (based on team registrations as of 12/31/25 and rounded up to the nearest whole number). A minimum of one team per chapter will advance.
    2. Finish in the top 10% of their chapter’s individual competition (based on total competitor registrations as of 12/31/2025 and rounded up to the nearest whole number).  In each chapter, a minimum of two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance.  (This may result in one or two students not finishing in the top 10% qualifying to advance.)
    3. WILD CARD: Attain an individual score or be on a team that attains a team score in the chapter competition that the state coordinators will set after all chapter competitions are completed. They will set these score thresholds after seeing how many students advance under criteria a. and b. above, and compare that number with how many competitors can be handled at the competition.

Volunteers willing to help at the competitions are welcome.  Several proctors, graders, and other roles are needed to pull off a successful competition.  Please contact the coordinator of the competition at which you can help.

Dates and locations have been set for the state competition and all of the chapter competitions across Indiana.  Please see the table below for competition information and coordinator contact information:
